Where Do All Hockey Players Go?
A continuous joke running through any youth, junior, college or professional hockey locker room is " Where do we go when this wonderful experience is over?" Well, the answer as we all know, is the young all "graduate" to the adult league. There they play as long as they wish maybe as long as the Gardens Ice House's Bill Wellington who at 87 is nearing the end of his life long game of hockey. But I get ahead of myself.
The DC Dawgs, a talented group of young players many of whom went on from youth hockey to juniors and college found themselves once again playing in Lake Placid. Playing in an USA Hockey LaBatt's Adult tournament, they did themselves proud by winning the gold medal- another 1980 Olympic memory of sorts. The DC Dawgs call the Gardens Ice House, Laurel, Maryland their home and many of the players played their youth hockey for the Capital Beltway Hockey league (CBHL). Some are now involved in coaching youth teams within USA Hockey; giving back to the sport that still is giving them a lot of challenges and a lot of joy.
